Synopsis

The Brazilian Computing Society (SBC) has prepared this Proposal for Updating the Computer Science Knowledge Subarea with the aim of contributing to the modernization of the classification currently adopted by Brazil's federal agencies responsible for funding and evaluating scientific research. The proposal reflects the evolution of Computer Science, the emergence of new research areas, and the increasing interdisciplinarity of the field.

This document was prepared by the following members of the SBC Working Group on the Definition of Computer Science Subareas, listed in alphabetical order: Adenilso Simão (USP São Carlos), Alba Cristina Magalhães Alves de Melo (UnB), André Luís de Medeiros Santos (UFPE), Antônio Abelém (UFPA), and Avelino Francisco Zorzo (PUCRS), with consulting support from Edmundo Roberto Mauro Madeira de Souza e Silva (UFRJ).

The proposal was developed based on an analysis of the current classification adopted by CAPES, CNPq, and FINEP; a review of national and international references on the classification of knowledge in Computer Science, including models adopted by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), as well as by international agencies and organizations; and an analysis of the research areas and research lines of Brazilian graduate programs in Computer Science.
