Synopsis

The Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC) is the most important forum for the research and development community in Computer Networks and Distributed Systems in Brazil. Among the main technical activities of SBRC are the short courses, which aim to provide updates on topics that are not usually covered in university curricula or that generate considerable interest among academics and professionals. This book contains the short courses selected for presentation at the XXXVI SBRC, held in Campos do Jordão, São Paulo, Brazil, from May 6 to 10, 2018. Each short course constitutes a chapter of this book and was designed to be presented over a period of 3 to 4 hours during the event.

For this edition, we assembled an Evaluation Committee comprising 22 researchers from different regions of Brazil, representing different areas of computer science and demonstrating significant contributions to their respective fields. A total of 23 proposals were submitted for evaluation, of which five were selected for presentation at the event, corresponding to an acceptance rate of 21.7%. Unfortunately, several other proposals of excellent quality were not accepted for presentation. Each proposal was evaluated by at least three reviewers, who provided relevant comments that contributed to the preparation of the final versions of the chapters. The quality of the chapters is fundamentally due to the efforts of each author. The event organizers are grateful for their dedication and the many hours they devoted to this work. We encourage the Computer Networks and Distributed Systems community to continue supporting SBRC and submitting new short-course proposals for future editions of the symposium.

The short courses selected for this edition address highly relevant topics that have been attracting interest from the academic and professional communities in Brazil. The chapters in this book are: Chapter 1: Humans in the Communication Cycle: Enablers of Next-Generation Networks; Chapter 2: Internet of Bionano Things: Connecting to Nanomachines; Chapter 3: Machine Learning on Distributed Stream Processing Platforms: Real-Time Threat Analysis and Detection; Chapter 4: Introduction to the P4 Language: Theory and Practice; and Chapter 5: Blockchain and the On-Demand Consensus Revolution.
